Are there any special tips for building a long-lasting deck?

Trapped moisture is the primary troublemaker for wood decks. Redwood heartwood resists decay, but proper construction can help minimize trapped moisture and its effects. Leave 3/16" between deckboards, so that debris will drop through. If you are going to apply a finish to your deck, consider coating all surfaces, including end-grain, before installing the deck boards.
